Editorial
There is a particular kind of ambition in Baroque Revival carving, an ambition that does not whisper but insists. Every surface of this suite speaks in the same unrelenting voice: the acanthus scrolling across the apron of the table, the caryatid figures rising from each cabriole leg, the putti tumbling across the crest rail of the corner chair. This is craftsmanship that understood ornament not as decoration but as argument.
The two pieces belong together not merely by matching vocabulary but by temperament. The table's shaped stone top, its scalloped edge following the rhythm of the carved apron below, finds its counterpart in the chair's original damask upholstery, gold and rose still present after more than a century. To separate them would be to misread what they are. Not two objects but one statement, made in walnut by hands that had something to say.
Provenance
Produced during the height of the Baroque Revival movement, likely by a Continental European workshop. The figural carving, caryatids, putti, and acanthus scrollwork, is consistent with Italian or French ateliers working for a luxury domestic market.
Acquired by the seller's family and held in continuous private ownership. Further provenance documentation available upon inquiry.
Offered for the first time. Original upholstery intact on the corner chair. Suite has not been separated.
